What is chiropractic?

The World Health Organisation defines chiropractic as:

‘A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on subluxations.’

Chiropractors have 5 years of university education which focuses on understanding the function of the spine and nervous system.

Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, all of which are predicated on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a complete history and diagnosing a patient, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.

For many conditions, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care is frequently the primary method of treatment. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

It is safe?

In the words of the New Zealand Government’s Inquiry, chiropractic care is “remarkably safe.”
Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs.1

In relation to the treatment of neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs.2

The British Medical journal reported on January 23, 1999 on a research study for low back pain that chiropractic is one of the safest forms of treatment available. The profession is delivering millions of adjustments daily to satisfied patients all around the world. Chiropractic care is non-invasive therefore the bodies response to it is more predictable than its reactions to drug treatments or surgical conditions. Chiropractic treatment should only be rendered by a professional with proper training and experience in manipulation which is a doctor of chiropractic.

Chiropractic is recognized as one of the safest types of health care in the world. Numerous studies, including those funded by governments, universities and non-profit research institutions, have proven it to be a successful primary therapy for neuromusculoskeletal conditions — a therapy that is safer, in fact, than most medical procedures used to treat the same conditions. Chiropractic is also widely used as a complementary mode of care for a variety of other conditions and diseases and to promote overall health and well-being.

How does it work?

After a thorough discussion of problems you may be seeking care for, we will conduct a thorough examination to determine any areas that need attention. From that we will develop a plan to get you feeling better. The most common approaches that we use are chiropractic adjustments which aim to restore better movement to spinal joints and exercise to help improve your strength, mobility and posture.

We use a range of techniques matched to your needs. Firmer adjustments are perfect for some people, while gentler adjustments are better for others. Adjustments can be done by hand or using hand held instruments. Adjustments are usually performed with the patient lying face down on a special adjusting table.

Chiropractic is based on the idea of removing imbalances both structural and postural in an effort to allow our body to heal itself. For this to happen the network of nerves and signals from your brain, down your spinal cord, to the network of nerves must be

allowed to flow freely without any interruption. Chiropractors have the ability and skill to remove these interruptions or misalignment’s and allow the body to perform as it was meant to.

If you’ve ever been in a car accident, played a sport, fell down or just bumped into something too hard, it’s very possible that you are not functioning at your best due to a misalignment. While there are many potential mechanical or structural causes for misalignment, there are also chemical reasons. For instance, if you smoke or drink excessively or even just have a poor diet, the chemical issues in your body can eventually cause underlying conditions and disease to appear.

Allowing a chiropractor to get you back on track both chemically and structurally will bring your body back to the proper state it should be in to perform at it’s peak.

Thompson Technique

The Thompson Technique consists of many different types of quick, small impulses aiming to correct vertebral misalignment’s and joint mechanics. These types of spinal adjustments are performed on a special table with segments that are known as drop pieces. The drop pieces allow the chiropractor to give a specific direction of adjustment to the spine. It is practiced by a large number of Chiropractors worldwide.

The Thompson Technique is commonly performed with the client lying face down. For many people this makes it more comfortable.

After the initial adjustment and restoration of the nerve function, there is an increased flow of energy causing the patient to feel a warm sensation flowing to different parts of the body. Patient may feel total relief just after one adjustment or the patient may require more than a single adjustment to relieve his/her symptoms. For an active and healthy body, it is essential to have a healthy nervous system.

This adjustment technique helps in restoring normal nerve function thus bringing relief from pain and benefiting in other ways too such as improving sleep, reducing stress and increasing the capacity of the body to function at its maximum.

Activator method

The Activator Method is an adjusting instrument that delivers a reproducible thrust of gentle
force that can be adjusted to suit our clients needs and comfort.

When most people think of chiropractics they think of spinal manipulations done by the hands of a chiropractor. Although this is the most common way to get adjusted, there are some other techniques that may be implemented during a treatment session.

There is a diagnostic and treatment system called the Activator Method that select chiropractors use to treat spinal subluxations, or dysfunctions of the spine. In fact, according to the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, over 50 percent of chiropractors use this technique. Mainly this method is an alternative to the traditional treatment plan that is used to help alleviate back and neck pain and headache pain.

The Activator Method implements a handheld instrument that is used to help restore motion to the injured area. It sends out gentle impulses to the spine using a spring technology that aids in the correction of the subluxations. The Activator is able to pulse faster than a human hand, which disables the body from tensing up during the treatment. It is also useful since it applies pressure exactly at the spot of injury, ensuring that the joint is not harmed in any way.

Impulse method

The Impulse Method uses a microprocessor controlled, hand held instrument to give adjustments. The Impulse instrument can give a short series of inputs which aim to restore movement to your spine.

Impulse adjusting is a new technique developed to provide controlled treatments to the specific areas you’re having trouble with. Impulse adjustments are high-tech.There is no popping or cracking with these adjustments , but rather very precise and targeted adjustments designed to specifically care for just the right areas.
Years of research have gone into the development of the Impulse Instruments to create gentle chiropractic adjustments that are safe and effective for patients of all ages. Our chiropractors use the Impulse Adjusting Instrument to provide this treatment rather than the traditional manual methods.
